There are many pieces of music to remind us of the horrors of war. If world leaders listened to the works of Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Benjamin Britten, Olivier Messiaen, Samuel Barber, Mieczysław Weinberg, they would go through life with empathy and compassion for the pain of human beings. They would not engage in military conflicts or, worse, start wars.
No single state interest can justify violence and attacks on peaceful nations. Those who take up arms multiply the grief of mothers, fathers and children.
We do not know how music can help when war is already underway. Thousands of people are suffering, separated from their loved ones and forced to give up their free, quiet lives and homes. That is why we publish links to charities currently providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
