The programme

  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp major, Op. 78, “À Thérèse”
  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 4 in E-flat major, Op. 7, “Grande Sonate”
  • Franz Schubert: Impromptu in B-flat major, D. 935, Op. 142, No. 3
  • Johannes Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 35 — a selection from Books I and II

Beethoven’s lyrical, two-movement Sonata Op. 78 is paired with the expansive early Sonata Op. 7, whose energy and humour offer a contrasting perspective on the composer’s piano writing.

After the intermission, Fomin turns to Schubert’s Impromptu with variations and his own selection from the two books of Brahms’s Paganini Variations. Based on the theme of Paganini’s Caprice No. 24, Brahms’s work combines formidable technical demands with harmonic depth and invention.

Towards Beethoven 2027

The recital forms part of Fomin’s continuing engagement with Beethoven’s piano music. He aims to complete his project to record all 32 piano sonatas in 2027, the bicentenary of the composer’s death.
